Jason was born to Willis and Catherine Todd. His father was a criminal and got caught and sent to jail leaving Jason alone with his drug addict mother. He often got meals mostly at school and the rest of the time had to fend for himself getting jobs like paper routes just to have a little food money. He hid it so his mother never found it to spend it on drugs. His mother did get some food stamps but she often bought the food and sold much of it for drug money. So he would resort to hiding the food so it'd last longer. But the last straw was when he was only 14 when his mother died of a drug overdose. Still owing debt most of her things including the house were sold and rather than going into foster care Jason fled before anyone could find him.
Needing some money he stole a tire from the Batmobile and hid it. And while coming back for the other three he got caught by Batman. And became his foster father. He put him in a boarding school but Jason ended up causing trouble or trying to escape. And the boarding school was secretly a school for the owner to train them to become future criminals. Bruce shut the place down sending everyone home and began training Jason on how to be Robin. After six months of training, he was given the new Robin suit as a gift on his 16th birthday. On his first mission, he learned Two Face was responsible for the death of his parents and confronted Batman on it learning he knew the whole time. He was devastated at being deceived. He nearly came close to killing him but he let Two Face get arrested instead. Which made Bruce proud believing he made the right choice in making Jason his second Robin.
He grew close with Alfred, Diana, and Barbara viewing them all like a second family. And with Dick as well even though he was now in Bludhaven but visited as often as he could. He knew the relationship between him and Bruce was strained but he always appreciated seeing Dick come and trained and hung out with Dick as often as he could. A few years later he learns the truth that his birth mother is still alive and Catherine was only his stepmother. He goes to Ethiopia to find her and learns Joker is blackmailing her. Revealing he's her son he tries to get her to safety but she cares for her own safety more than his and arranges to deliver him to Joker. But Joker doublecrosses her and knocks her out. Before beating Jason nearly to death. But telling him that Batman clearly didn't care about him or he'd have found him by now and be stopping Joker. Then left a time bomb with them trapped and blocking the exits. Sheila woke up realizing what happened and woke up Jason enough as they try to escape. But the bomb goes off as both are presumed dead and buried. Sheila survives long enough to greet Batman and regrets what happened. Both are taken back to Gotham to be buried next to the Todds.
But Joker had a few tricks up his sleeves and had injected Jason with some water from the Lazarus Pit he got from bribing one of Ra's Al Ghoul's men before killing them to cover his tracks and keep the money. Enough to slowly heal him and not kill him but it would take time. And to everyone else, Jason Todd would be dead. He planned to retrieve Jason later to throw in Bruce's face he let Jason die. But Jason woke up earlier than planned and broke the coffin lid and dug himself out. And seeing Shiela's grave next to Willis and Catherine Todd's made him realize all 3 of his parents were now dead. And Joker's earlier words made enough doubt that he couldn't trust Bruce. He'd left him for dead and he wasn't sure how he was alive and unaware the Lazarus pit water was also affecting his mind. Like all users of the pit, it temporarily drives the users a little insane. Since he only had an injection it lessened the effects but he's still determined to seek revenge on not only Joker for killing his birth mother and nearly killing him. But also now after Two-Face for killing his father. And to the Batfamily who he thinks abandoned him. He then woke up in another world. Curious about the magic in him they are able to remove the side effects of the Lazarus Pit so he's no longer crazy but still alive. And he's forced to serve the army as a slave.
