Artie was the son of Jennifer Gibson and Archie Andrews. When Archie and several other students disappeared from Riverdale, Geraldine found herself pregnant. Not wanting a scandal or risk losing her job she eventually took a sabbatical and gave birth to her son. He reminded her too much of what she lost Archie. So she gave him up for adoption. But instead, he was taken in by a foster family in a neighboring town of Greendale. With her secret safe, Jennifer still using the fake alias Miss Grundy continued to teach at Riverdale High. With Jason's death and the disappearance of students Archie Andrews, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones to name a few people investigated their lives but found no traces of what happened to them. Their families eventually had funerals for them but the police called them a closed case as they were presumed to either be runaways or killed by persons unknown.
Meanwhile, Artie grew up in Greendale with an abusive foster family who just wanted him for the money. He was forced to do as many chores at home as he could while his older foster brothers would just watch tv. His brothers abused him at school and at home but were more discreet at school not wanting to get caught. Even set up their brother to take the fall for some pranks that ended up getting him detention a few times. After his seventh birthday, he wished to get away from here and find his birth family. He went to sleep that night and woke up in a strange palace. Not sure what was going on he began to explore hoping to find some answers. And hoping this wasn't just a dream.
